America at 250: Meet the John Knox Village Residents Keeping History Alive

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, two John Knox Village residents are helping ensure the nation’s history continues to inspire future generations. Through lifelong passions for historical research, preservation, and education, Charlie Peoples and David Jackson remind us that history isn’t just about the past, it’s about understanding who we are and where we’re going.

Learning From the Past: Charlie Peoples’ Passion for History

Charlie Peoples is a self-described history buff, particularly the American Revolution and learning about the founding of the United States. It was when his brother began to do genealogy research that he became interested in the Civil War. They learned that several of their descendants served in the Civil War in the South.

When Charlie retired, he was able to spend more time learning more about the Civil War, and he eventually became involved in the Civil War Roundtable while living in Texas.

He started a chapter of that group when he moved to John Knox Village. The group brings in speakers, professors and more to discuss various aspects of the Civil War. Charlie said the focus isn’t necessarily on battles, but the impacts of the war. Around 30 residents attend the monthly meetings.
“I think there are always lessons to be learned from history and wars, certainly with the Civil War,” Charlie said. “History is more than the events, facts and dates. It’s about the impacts they had and why they happened and what we can learn from them. We are lucky to live in such a great country, but it’s important to remember and not repeat our mistakes.”

Preserving Our Stories: David Jackson’s Lifelong Mission

At age 11, resident David Jackson began what would become his career and lifelong passion as an archivist and historical preservationist.

David said at a young age, he would rather spend time listening to his grandparents than playing outside. In his teens, he spent his time collecting family history documents. That turned into obtaining a degree in historical preservation from Southeast Missouri State University. He spent 15 years with the Jackson County Historical Society, modernizing the archive system and preserving Jackson County history. In 1996, he founded The Orderly Pack Rat, a historical research, consulting and publishing house.

He has written several books, including These Walls Were Made For Talking, and has coordinated the compilation of more than 1,800 oral histories of area military veterans as part of the Veterans History Project. He also published several books through the Jackson County Historical Society.

“If you think about it, Jackson County and this area was the hub and center for many major events in American history,” David said. “We were the funnel for the Western Movement between 1820 and 1860; Kansas was at the edge of the United States at the time; and then you have Mormon history, and of course President Truman.”

David’s passion is to help keep history alive by encouraging individuals to record their memories and history. “My personal mission is to let everyone know they have a story to tell and to record it,” David said. “Our stories are America’s stories and preserving that is so important. Americans, and especially Kansas Citians, have a can-do spirit that is to be shared.”

John Knox Village: A Community Where Passions Continue to Thrive

At John Knox Village, retirement is an opportunity to continue pursuing lifelong passions, sharing knowledge and making a meaningful impact. Whether leading educational discussions, preserving local history, or inspiring others to record their own stories, residents like Charlie and David demonstrate that curiosity and purpose never retire.

As America celebrates 250 years, their work serves as a reminder that history is kept alive not only in books and archives, but through the people who dedicate themselves to sharing it.
