Continuum of Village Health Services Prove Vital for Residents

Many John Knox Village residents express a sense of comfort in knowing that a range of health and wellness services are available to them on campus, if a need arises.

For residents Ellie Grubb and Mary Skach, the Village’s continuum of therapy services became a pathway to their recovery. After sudden injuries required surgery and lengthy recoveries, both women discovered the advantages of having multiple levels of support available right here, where they live.

Healing After Surgery – The Village Rehabilitation Unit

Ellie’s journey began with a fall that caused multiple pelvic and hip fractures. Her surgeon recommended a short-term stay in a rehab facility before she returned home.

“I immediately asked to go to the Village Rehabilitation Unit,” she said.

At the Rehab Unit, therapists designed a personalized plan to help her regain strength, mobility, and confidence. Physical therapy helped her regain balance and independence. Occupational therapy prepared her for daily tasks like dressing, stepping in and out of the shower, and working in the kitchen.

“Practicing those things in their simulated home environment, before I went home, gave me confidence that I could manage,” Ellie added.

Mary didn’t expect to need the Village’s health services so soon after moving here with her husband, Bob. But in July of 2024, she fell and broke her femur in four places – a devastating injury that required extensive surgery. She, too, spent several weeks in the Rehab Unit.

“I never imagined how vital the Village’s services would become,” Mary said. “But I’m so grateful they were all right here when I needed them.”

Continuing Progress at Home – Home Health by John Knox Village

As Ellie prepared to return home, her social worker connected her with Home Health by John Knox Village.

“A nurse visited regularly to monitor her recovery, and our in-home therapy team continued working to get Ellie back on her feet,” explained therapy manager Sarah McKenny. “We also recommended some changes she could make in her home so she could get around more easily.”

Ellie said it was a great experience.

“Everyone was so good, so helpful – and it gave me peace of mind knowing I could call if I needed something.”

Mary also benefited from home health services. In addition to therapy support, she received wound care in the comfort of her own home. That extra layer of care gave her the ability to heal without worrying about traveling back and forth for treatments.

Both women said progressing from one service to another within the Village made recovery smoother. Instead of managing multiple providers in different locations, they had a consistent care team guiding them forward.

Regaining Strength – Outpatient Therapy by John Knox Village

Once Ellie completed her home health care, she transitioned to Outpatient Therapy by John Knox Village. For eight weeks she worked with therapists, setting goals that mattered to her.

“I told them I wanted to be able to get out and start doing my walks again – which I am – and to drive again,” she said. “It’s a blessing to know that these services are here when you need them.”

Mary also continued her recovery through outpatient therapy, which helped her rebuild strength after her surgery. The convenience of staying within the Village, surrounded by familiar therapists and staff, provided both comfort and continuity.

Staying Active for Life – Fitness and Wellness Programs

Mary’s journey took an unexpected turn when, not long after her fall, she was diagnosed with dystonia, a movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions and abnormal postures. Instead of letting the diagnosis slow her down, she started taking classes at the Parkinson’s Connection six times a week, including Rock Steady Boxing, balance work, and tai chi.

“It’s making me stronger,” Mary said. “Even my doctor said he’s impressed with my muscle tone.”

She began walking without a walker, something she once thought might never be possible again. And thanks to the Village’s Dial-A-Ride transportation service, she never has to worry about how she’ll get to her appointments or classes.

A Journey Back to Independence

Ellie and Mary’s journeys highlight what makes John Knox Village unique: a continuum of care that doesn’t just respond to medical needs but supports the whole person – body, mind, and spirit.

Though the road to recovery was challenging, neither woman walked it alone. With the Village’s resources on their side, both have found renewed strength, growing confidence, and a deeper sense of independence.
