Because COVID-19 infection rates are dropping both at John Knox Village and in the surrounding community, the Village Care Center is suspending its daily COVID-19 case updates and will begin posting only when a positive case occurs.

I am writing to update you on the results of our COVID-19 testing of residents and associates in Long Term Care. I love to share good news when I can, however, today’s message is a mixture of good and somewhat less good.
- Good News: All LTC associates tested negative!
- Not So Good News: Several more LTC residents tested positive, raising our number this week to 10.
- Good News: So far, all COVID+ residents have mild or no symptoms. All will stay in our isolation unit until released by Dr. Twenter, our medical director. We believe that the fact that nearly all residents received a second COVID-19 booster shot on April 18 is contributing to this.
- Good News: Activities and salon services will continue with masking and social distancing employed. Only one client in the salon at a time, and only one resident per table in the Main Dining Room, for activities.
- Not So Good News: Dining in the Main Dining Room will be paused for most residents for the time being.
- Good News: We will continue to have the residents that need assistance in the MDR. This will allow us to spread those residents out. They should wear masks until they are eating/drinking.
Follow-Up Testing: All Long Term Care residents will be re-tested on Mondays May 2 and 9.
Visitation. Loved ones are still able to visit, as long as they follow the Village Care Center’s COVID-19 Visitation Guidelines. Those in isolation can still have visits – while using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) – as long as the visitors understand the level of risk involved. Please read the Visitation Guidelines here. Remember, too, that you can look on that page at any time to see when new positive cases are recorded at the Village Care Center. If a date is not listed, that means no new cases were reported that day.
We honestly have no idea how this came into the building, so it is essential that we remain diligent in the use of our infection control measures.
- Infection Control is EVERYONE’S responsibility. I can’t say this too many times. Every single one of us has a part to play in keeping our residents COVID-free.
- All associates and visitors must wear masks while in the building.
- For at least the next couple of weeks, residents are highly encouraged to keep their masks on during visits. Visitors must keep their masks on.
- Do not enter the building if you feel sick.
- Remember to wash or sanitize your hands before, during and after a visit.
Let’s take good care of ourselves – and each other.

It has been quite a while since I’ve needed to write about COVID-19. I know we are all grateful for this recent lull. Life at the Village Care Center has settled into a much more normal routine. Residents are coming out of their rooms and interacting with one another again, we are serving two meals a day in our main dining room, and people are having so much fun participating in activities and exercise classes!!
The fact is, COVID-19 has not disappeared. We’re able to do all of these things because our team and our visitors are continuing to use good infection control practices, and we’re helping VCC residents stay current on their vaccinations. I deeply appreciate everyone’s cooperation on this front.
Unfortunately, the infection rate in the Jackson County area is climbing again, therefore we are beginning to see some positive cases here at the Village.
- New COVID-19 positive test results. After one Long Term Care resident experienced a fever Sunday evening, their rapid test came back positive for COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution, we then tested all LTC residents and three more residents tested positive. Some of these residents do have some mild symptoms but we are not sure that COVID is even the cause of the symptoms. Three live on the same hallway, and three have already received the second booster during our April 18 booster clinic. An additional LTC resident tested positive this morning, after exhibiting mild symptoms. All Long Term Care residents will be re-tested Thursday, April 28, and the following two Mondays, May 2 and 9.
- Associate testing. Testing of all Long Term Care staff began yesterday and will wrap up tonight. So far, all are negative.
- Isolation. These COVID+ residents are being moved to an empty hallway on our rehab unit. They will need to remain in their rooms under COVID isolation until it is discontinued by our medical director, Dr. Twenter.
- COVID-19 Booster Shots. All VCC residents were given the opportunity to receive their second Moderna booster shot on April 18. Nearly all eligible residents accepted and should now have some level of added protection.
- Infection Control Survey. In a great convergence of events, The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services was here Monday and completed a routine COVID-19 infection control survey. They found us to be in compliance.
- Visitation.
- Infection Control is EVERYONE’S responsibility. We are emphasizing this message to all residents, associates, and visitors. Every single one of us has a part to play in keeping our residents COVID-free.
All associates and visitors must wear masks while in the building. - For at least the next couple of weeks, residents are highly encouraged to keep their masks on during visits. Visitors must keep their masks on.
- Do not enter the building if you feel sick.
- Remember to wash or sanitize your hands before, during and after a visit.
On a happier note, this seems like a good time to remind everyone that outdoor visits are still a fantastic option, when possible. A little sunshine and a lot of fresh air make for an even safer way to visit with your loved one while not inadvertently infecting them with the coronavirus.
Let’s take good care of ourselves – and each other.
