Village Named Parkinson’s Foundation Community Partner in Parkinson’s Care
John Knox Village was recently recognized by The Parkinson’s Foundation for our commitment to improving access to care and support for those living with Parkinson’s disease in Kansas City, MO, Lee’s Summit, and beyond. The Village is currently the only site in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska or Iowa named as one of the foundation’s “Community Partners in Parkinson’s Care,” and is one of just over 100 locations in the U.S.
The foundation recognizes that people often seek out senior living communities as their disease advances, so they created a train-the-trainer curriculum to provide member locations the tools to prepare and empower clinical staff, along with ongoing support from Parkinson’s disease (PD) experts.
“Because people need increasing assistance over time, and John Knox Village offers many levels of Parkinson’s care, this seemed like a perfect opportunity to bring even more quality services to John Knox Village residents who are living with Parkinson’s,” shared Victoria Shatto, Village Outpatient Therapy manager.
Resident Care Coordination Liaison Melanie McGraw explained that she and Shatto have completed a 4-module training on Parkinson’s Disease plus an additional 2 full days of training – earning them the title of Site Champions. They have now shared this training with the clinical teams at Village Assisted Living and the Village Care Center. “It makes good sense to provide more parts of our care continuum with deeper knowledge about Parkinson’s disease and best care practices, so patients can feel confident about transitioning to more advanced levels of care when there is a need.”
