John Knox Village Loves Pets

Senior Independent Living Community in Kansas City, MO. is Pet-FriendlySenior residents at John Knox Village stand outside with their pet poodle

John Knox Village loves its residents and loves their pets. If you take a drive around the John Knox Village campus, you’ll be sure to notice the number of people outside walking their dogs. We also know there are plenty of health benefits to owning a pet.

However, many people still wonder whether pets are allowed on the campus. The following are four of the common questions senior living consultants are asked. (Of course, more specific questions about the pet policy should be directed to a senior living consultant.)

  • Can I bring my pet to live with me in my home at John Knox Village?

Yes! Here at the Village, a “pet” is defined as a domesticated fur-bearing animal, principally a dog or cat. Residents are expected to be responsible pet owners, respecting their neighbors and John Knox Village’s property as well as the ordinances of the City of Lee’s Summit. There is no size restriction, but pet owners are encouraged to assess the space requirements for their pet when selecting their JKV home. Also, dogs that have exhibited dangerous behavior in the past are not permitted per Lee’s Summit city ordinance and are not allowed at JKV.
Residents with another type of pet, such as a bird or fish, also are asked to be responsible pet owners and follow applicable registration and maintenance procedures.

Pet owners must complete a pet application form and provide pertinent information to John Knox Village before the pet will be approved for residency. Information required includes proof of current Lee’s Summit pet license; proof of up-to-date vaccinations; necessary insurance information; names of alternative caretakers in the event of emergency; and a photo of the pet. Final approval of a pet to reside at John Knox Village is the sole right of management.

  • Do I need to pay pet rent or a pet deposit?

Pet owners must maintain liability insurance coverage of at least $100,000. Liability insurance coverage often is covered under a personal property or rental insurance policy.

  • Can I put in a fence for my dog?

Fences of any kind are not allowed on the John Knox Village campus. However, pet owners who live in homes other than apartments can leave their pets outside on a leash for 30 minutes at time for up to three hours total a day, per a Lee’s Summit ordinance.

  • What if I need someone to walk my dog for me?

John Knox Village residents can use private-duty services to help. Village Helpers assist with personal care, household tasks (such as help with your furry friend) and companionship, as well as errand services, transportation, accompanying you to appointments or shopping, even help with therapist-ordered exercises.
