All About the Heart: Prioritizing Heart Health at Every Age

John Knox Village nurse and resident

February is American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and encourage heart-friendly habits. At John Knox Village, we understand that heart health is essential at every stage of life and can help you enjoy a fulfilling, active lifestyle.

The Facts About Heart Disease

Heart disease and stroke remain the leading causes of death in the United States. In 2021, these conditions claimed more lives than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined. According to the American Heart Association, between 2017 and 2020, nearly 48.6% of U.S. adults (127.9 million people) had some form of cardiovascular disease.

Simple Steps to a Healthier Heart

Dr. Kate Twenter, DO, Village Medical Director, emphasizes that heart health begins with daily choices.

“There are things we all know are beneficial—and things that aren’t—for our heart. But these commonsense steps really have a long-term impact,” Dr. Twenter shares. “Walking four to five times a week, eating a low-fat diet, reducing salt intake, not smoking, and managing blood pressure are all important. Staying active in your health, diet, and exercise—even one step at a time—makes a difference.”

Dr. Twenter’s Heart Health Tips for Seniors

Recognize the signs.

Symptoms of heart issues in older adults may look different than they do in younger individuals. Fatigue, dizziness, or body aches can be early indicators.

Get annual blood work.

Cholesterol, thyroid function, and Vitamin D levels can provide early warning signs of heart-related conditions.

Listen to your body.

If something feels off—whether it’s an unusual ache or persistent fatigue—speak with your primary care physician. Don’t wait for it to improve on its own.

A Resident’s Heart Health Journey

Village Assisted Living resident Dick Howard knows firsthand the importance of heart health. After suffering a heart attack in 2016, undergoing surgeries for congestive heart failure, and receiving an aortic valve replacement in March 2023, he is now thriving at 95 years old.

“Get out and start moving, drink water instead of soda, skip the snacks, and make sure to laugh,” Dick advises. “I also can’t overstate what a relief it is to be where I am, surrounded by caring nurses. I truly believe it has extended my life.”
