More Ways to Stay Active at John Knox Village
From pickleball and swimming to group exercise and personal training, residents at John Knox Village have plenty of ways to stay active.
The community’s fitness and wellness programs give residents choices based on their interests, abilities, and goals. Some residents come with years of experience. Others decide to try an activity for the first time after moving to John Knox Village.
For Eric Nehlsen, CSCS, Fitness Manager at John Knox Village, the focus is on providing programs that have a purpose.
“Fitness at John Knox Village is about more than filling a class schedule,” Eric said. “Our programs help residents maintain and improve strength, balance, mobility, confidence, and functional independence, which can support a higher quality of life.”
Fitness Programs With Residents in Mind
John Knox Village continues to evaluate its fitness offerings as resident interests and needs evolve.
“As we look toward the future, my goal is to build on our existing fitness program and ensure that every element of the program is purposeful, accessible, and evidence-based,” Eric said.
That includes potentially expanding class offerings, fully utilizing the Village’s amenities, increasing resident participation, and ensuring adequate staffing and resources needed to provide programs consistently.
Residents can choose from a variety of activities throughout the community, including water aerobics, Zumba, yoga, and many other group fitness and recreational programs.
The recent addition of the Daniel D. Rexroth Recreation Center offers new and updated amenities, including two indoor pickleball courts, an indoor basketball hoop, an outdoor swimming pool, and additional spaces for recreation and fitness activities.
Having a variety of choices allows residents to find activities that fit into their routines and try new ones when they are interested.
Pickleball Brings Fitness and Friendship Together
Resident Cliff discovered pickleball after a friend encouraged him to give it a try.
“I had a friend who was a pickleball player who thought I would enjoy playing,” Cliff said. “I went to clinics at John Knox Village, learned how to keep score, and I’m addicted to it now.”
John Knox Village pickleball clinics helped Cliff learn the rules and scoring while giving him an opportunity to practice through drills.
He also found another benefit to the game.
“I would highly recommend it,” Cliff said. “It’s a great physical activity where you have fun competition. It’s a great social activity. I’ve met friends, and everyone is supportive of each other.”
Staying Active in the Pool
Resident Donna Cline has been physically active for much of her life. At John Knox Village, she added pool classes to her routine.
She started with classes in the indoor pool twice a week. After seeing the results she was getting, she began participating in water aerobics as well.
“Our instructor, Melinda, is terrific,” Donna said.
The classes incorporate exercises that work on areas such as balance, core strength, and mobility.
Donna’s encouragement to other residents who are considering a class is straightforward.
“Come out and try it!”
Personal Training at John Knox Village
Exercise and wellness can play an important role in maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility as we age.
“As we age, staying active can play an important role in maintaining functional independence,” Eric said. “Things like balance, flexibility, strength, and bone density are so important.”
John Knox Village offers residents different ways to incorporate movement into their routines. That might mean attending a regular fitness class, swimming, learning pickleball, working with a trainer, or choosing another activity they enjoy.
The variety also gives residents the flexibility to change their routines and explore different activities over time.
Find What Works for You
There is no single fitness routine that works for every resident.
Cliff found pickleball. Donna enjoys the pool. Other residents prefer a group fitness class, basketball, personal training, and other activities offered at John Knox Village.
Having those choices close to home gives residents opportunities to explore what is available and decide what fits their interests. Sometimes, as Cliff discovered, trying something new can lead to an activity you did not expect to enjoy quite so much.
