Residents Learn New Skills and Explore Old Talents at John Knox Village’s Art Studio
The art studio at John Knox Village has become a favorite gathering place for residents who enjoy creating, learning, and sharing time with friends. Some discover the joy of painting or drawing for the first time. Others return to a hobby they’ve loved for years. Whatever their experience, many John Knox Village residents find a welcoming place to relax, learn, and connect.
Classes That Spark Creativity
Sindy Goodall, Lifestyles Assistant at John Knox Village, helps coordinate the studio’s projects and classes.
“The art studio is such a fun spot,” Sindy says. “We host paint and pour sessions, make jewelry, and create all kinds of crafts, even ‘bumpkins’ and ‘mumpkins’—seasonal crafts made from bundt pans and pumpkins. People get a kick out of it. They use them as centerpieces during John Knox Village events.”
Each class includes approximately 10 to 20 participants, giving everyone a chance to work closely with the instructors. Sindy says residents enjoy learning at their own pace while sharing ideas and stories with their friends and neighbors.
Monthly Gallery Shows
Once a month, the art studio at John Knox Village turns into a small gallery featuring work by residents. The exhibits include drawings, paintings, and handmade items. Artists invite their neighbors, friends, and family for a lively, supportive atmosphere.
Cecilia, a resident artist, says being part of the studio has helped her reconnect with something she missed.
“I hadn’t painted or drawn for a long time,” she says. “Now I have a place to create again. It feels good to be part of something that encourages us to keep learning.”
Learning That Lasts a Lifetime
Jan, a resident and one of the instructors, has more than 40 years of experience teaching art. She says the joy of helping people learn never fades.
“Art isn’t like football. You can do it your whole life,” Jan says. “What I love most is seeing someone who thinks they can’t draw realize they actually can. That lightbulb moment never gets old.”
Jan’s drawing classes focus on basic skills and confidence-building. Those who take part feel proud of what they’ve accomplished and surprised by what they can do.
Building Friendships Through Art
Longtime residents Pat and Dorothy are often found in the studio working on jewelry or other projects. They’ve taught classes together and say the creative time is just as important as the social side.
“It’s a great place to meet people,” Pat says. “You get to share what you enjoy and see what others are making. There’s so much talent here, and everyone encourages each other.”
For many, the art studio is a reminder that staying active can mean many things: trying new things, meeting new people, or simply keeping your hands and mind busy.
