IT’S NEARLY GO TIME!

Under Construction Sign

John Knox Village is getting closer to making a new headquarters for its Emergency Medical Services department a reality.

With funding complete (Thanks to the generosity of you and your neighbors!), contractor contracts signed, work permits obtained, and plans all set, construction and renovation work is set to begin in early March. Using the frame of a former physicians building, which is located at 506 Murray Road between the D Building and the Ambassador Room, the new customized, multi-use space will better meet the varied operational and personal needs of the EMS team. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“Thank you to each and every person who contributed to this project. We accomplished this goal together,” said Gail Benne, president of the John Knox Village Foundation. “The success of this campaign is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when we unite behind a shared goal. Time and again, we saw extraordinary commitment and generosity because so many believed in the importance of this project and in the people who provide this important service both on our campus and throughout the greater Kansas City area.”

As demand for ambulance transportation grew, so did the staff, which caused EMS to outgrow its current quarters located behind the Administrative Center. When the service was established in the late 1970s, the Village had only one ambulance and a single two-person crew. Today, the department has five ambulances, two mental health transportation vans and a team of 40 EMS professionals.

The new headquarters will provide members of the Village EMS team who are on duty for 8-, 12- and 24-hour shifts a proper place to recharge after a call. In addition to providing adequate space for those who are on duty to be together in one building, the garage will accommodate multiple ambulances. What’s more, the new headquarters is in an ideal location that supports quick and efficient response times.

Key Features of the New EMS Headquarters

  • Multiple offices and computer stations

  • Private bunk rooms for on-duty staff

  • Multiple restrooms and shower rooms

  • A spacious pull-through garage

  • A meeting/training room

  • A spacious dayroom/kitchen area
