August Village Assisted Living COVID Updates

Aug. 31, 2020

I wanted to touch base since my last e-mail and let you know how things are going.

COVID-19 Testing: We will re-test staff on Sept. 3, as a follow-up due to the resident who tested positive on Aug. 21.  The resident has returned to Village Assisted Living and is doing very well.

To follow up on our associate who, as part of a group testing, received a positive result—enough time elapsed between the time that person last worked and the day we learned of their test result that additional testing of others was not warranted. To be cautious, we temporarily increased the frequency of vital signs checking to four times a day. All others tested at the same time as this associate came back negative, the associate also is doing very well and remains asymptomatic.

Courtyard Visits: Last week was another wonderful week filled with many enjoyable courtyard visits.  Please peruse the times Kristin emailed out last week and find one that works for you and your family and sign up!  We look forward to seeing you soon!  I also look forward to any suggestions that will make things easier for everyone involved.

Feedback? We are in uncharted territory with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the paths we are creating are being made by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Centers for Disease Control, the Missouri Department of Health, and Jackson County.  I want to make sure you know that I welcome feedback on our how I communicate and advocate for you and your loved one’s needs as we try to navigate our way through these unusual circumstances.  If there is anything you would like to share with me, please do!

I can’t thank you enough for your continued trust with Village Assisted Living as we go through all of this together.  If there is anything you need, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Aug. 26, 2020

We learned yesterday afternoon that a direct care associate who was swabbed on Monday, Aug. 24 has tested positive for COVID-19. This was part of our group testing scheduled after an AL (non-memory care) resident tested positive on Aug. 21. (See my Aug. 21 letter.)  The most recent shift worked by this associate, who is asymptomatic, was on Aug. 18.  All others tested as part of this group received negative results.

The Jackson County Health Department’s current guidance is to test those who had contact with someone having a positive result two days prior to diagnosis. In this case, that date would be Aug. 21. Since this person hasn’t worked since Aug. 18, we will not be conducting additional testing at this time.

To be extra safe, though, and per the direction of the John Village Medical director, we will increase vital sign checks from two times a day to four in Assisted Living and in Memory Care 1, 2 and 3.  At this time, all our residents and associates are asymptomatic.

We are working hard to prevent COVID-19 from entering the building and we continue to remain diligent in following our infection control procedures day in and day out. Thank you, again, for your continued support.

To summarize the Village’s current status with COVID-19 cases:

Village Assisted Living: Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 8/26/20:

  • 2 residents and 6 associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 1 resident and 5 associates have recovered from COVID-19

Village Care Center: Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 8/26/20:

  • 5 residents and 17 associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 4 residents and 15 associates have recovered from COVID-19

All Village areas outside of VCC and VAL:

Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 8/26/20:

  • 6 associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 6 associates have recovered from COVID-19

We have had some cases that, upon re-testing, we suspect they may have been false positives. We are erring on the side of caution and counting them as testing positive and as recovered. 3/14/20 is when the John Knox Village campus began steps to close to visitors.

Aug. 23, 2020

We learned yesterday that a resident swabbed Friday (Aug. 21) has tested positive for COVID-19. This was part of our group re-testing process scheduled to happen 14 days following possible exposure through an associate who tested positive earlier this month. (See my Aug. 11 letter.)

This resident tested negative on the first round of testing and is without symptoms (asymptomatic), as are all residents. In the interest of everyone’s safety, this person has been transferred to the Isolation Unit in the Village Care Center.

So far, all other VAL test results from Friday have come back negative. All resident results have been received; we are waiting to hear about five more associates.

John Knox Village feels strongly that this positive case is unrelated to the associate we reported about on Aug. 11 for several reasons.  Therefore, we are testing all associates who came in contact with this resident since Aug. 12 (the date of the resident’s last negative COVID-19 test), on August 24.  We may expand testing, based on the results from this new round of employee tests.

Also, the Village Care Center reported Friday two associate positive test results. One is a new associate in a non-direct care position who was only in orientation one day, had no direct contact with residents, and had very limited contact with other non-direct care associates. The second is a nutrition services associate who was tested by their physician due to a recent loss of taste and smell. That person has not worked since Sunday, Aug. 16 and had no direct contact with residents or patients. All other potentially exposed nutrition services associates will be tested.

As anticipated, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services visited the Village Care Center last Monday to conduct another focused infection control survey, following the recent COVID+ resident test results we told you about. Those residents are still in the Isolation Unit and are doing well. The three surveyors who visited, once again found zero deficiencies. They were especially pleased with their observations of associates’ hand hygiene and mask compliance.

Village Assisted Living is following the same procedures as the Village Care Center, so it is good to hear that the State feels we’re doing the right things to control infection.

Because I understand the concerns these announcements may raise in your mind, I encourage you to always review the chart at the bottom of my letters. It is our goal to keep you updated on both the number of diagnosed cases, as well as the recoveries. I hope this helps bring you greater comfort about the daily care and safety of your loved one.

To summarize the Village’s current status with COVID-19 cases:

Aug. 19, 2020

I want to give you an update regarding the COVID-19 testing related to the positive results last week.

To recap, we were informed on August 10 of a direct care worker in assisted living (non-memory care) who tested positive for COVID-19, then on August 14 we learned that a direct care worker on the Memory Care II neighborhood tested positive for the virus.  We completed testing for all potentially exposed residents and associates last week, with the exception of two agency personnel.  At this time, we have received all results back, and I am happy to share that all of the results have been negative.  It will likely be the end of the week before I know the results of the two agency personnel.

We will re-test all potentially exposed residents and associates from the August 10 notification on Friday, August 21.  The potentially exposed residents and associates from the August 14 notification will not be re-tested, due to the length of time it has been since the associate last worked (Aug. 2).

Updates regarding COVID-19 elsewhere on our campus:

  • Village Care Center:
    – On Aug. 12, the VCC received news that three Long Term Care (LTC) residents tested positive for COVID-19. They were part of a group that was tested due to an associate testing positive 14 days prior, however their results are not considered to be connected to the positive associate. All other long term care residents and associate tests from that limited round of testing were negative.
    – On Aug. 14, the VCC received three additional COVID+ test results for associates. One has been working from home (and thus will not be included in the numbers below); one works in laundry, with no resident exposure; and one is a CNA in the 100 side of the long term care neighborhood and was asymptomatic.
    – The VCC continues to work closely with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
  • Village areas outside of VCC and VAL: All associates have recovered and have returned to work.

Please be assured that we are working very hard to be methodical in testing and screening associates (and residents, when necessary) regularly. This way, we are as aware as quickly as possible when someone does test positive and can move quickly and to contain and mitigate the situation to the best of our ability. You are seeing positive results more often because we are being vigilant.

To summarize the Village’s current status with COVID-19 cases:
Village Assisted Living: Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 8/19/20:

  • 1 resident and 5 associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 1 resident and 3 associates have recovered from COVID-19

Village Care Center: Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 8/19/20:

  • 5 residents and 16 associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 3 residents and 14 associates have recovered from COVID-19

All Village areas outside of VCC and VAL:
Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 8/19/20:

  • 6 associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 6 associates have recovered from COVID-19

We have had some cases that, upon re-testing, we suspect they may have been false positives. We are erring on the side of caution and counting them as testing positive and as recovered. 3/14/20 is when the John Knox Village campus began steps to close to visitors.

Aug. 18, 2020

I cannot tell you how much we appreciate your ongoing support as we work during this extraordinary time to keep our campus as COVID-free as possible.

Last week was a busy week, including two notifications of associates with positive test results for COVID-19.  Watch for a separate e-mail with details on the results of all the testing that was completed, but for now I will quickly share that all of the testing we have completed came back negative!

Today I’d like to update you on what else is going on.

Flu Shots: On Wednesday, Sept. 23, Symbria RX Services will be on site to administer flu shots to our residents.  Flu shots are going to be especially important this year, as the continued presence of the coronavirus in our nation could make flu season even more dangerous. Residents in assisted living will receive their flu shot in the Ambassador Meeting Room from 9 am – 12 pm, and our memory care neighborhoods will follow suit.  Our nursing staff will ensure that residents have the proper paperwork completed prior to the vaccination.  If you have questions, please contact your loved one’s nurses’ station at (816) 347-2702 to get more information.

Voting: November 3 is right around the corner, and I have many residents asking me about when they will be able to vote.  Last week I reached out to my contact, Lori Smith, at the Jackson County Election Board, to get the details and timelines of mail in ballots for our assisted living residents.  At this time I have not heard back from her, but just as soon as I do, I’ll be certain to let everyone know the information she shares.

Outside Visits: I hear so many great things about our outside visits!  Thank you for your continued support.  These in-person visits mean so much to the residents, and your compliance with the visitation guidelines helps ensure that we can continue offering them.  Please click on one of the links below to schedule your visit.

I can’t thank you enough for your continued trust with Village Assisted Living as we navigate these unprecedented times together.  If there is anything you need, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Aug. 14, 2020

I have some important updates to share with you regarding COVID-19 testing here at Village Assisted Living and our Memory Care 2 neighborhood.

First, we have received all but two of the results back for the associates who were potentially exposed to a co-worker who tested positive on Aug. 10. I am happy to report that all the results from the Aug. 13 collection are negative. This is great news, especially when coupled with the news that all the residents who participated in follow-up testing on Aug. 12 also were negative.

Second, late this afternoon I learned that a caregiver on the Memory Care 2 neighborhood has tested positive for the virus. The associate last worked on Aug. 2 and has not been in the building since then. On Aug. 10, this individual developed symptoms associated with COVID-19 and was tested on Aug. 12.

Because of the positive result, the residents of Memory Care 2, as well as the associates who came into contact with the individual will be tested starting tomorrow morning, per recommendations from state guidelines. All associates, residents and responsible family members have already been notified that the testing will take place.

I will keep you apprised of the results and hope to be able to share good news with you in coming days. Please know, the safety and wellbeing of our residents and associates is my top priority, and we are doing all we can to limit any possible presence of COVID-19 in our buildings.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, and I will do my best to answer them.

Aug. 11, 2020

I want to provide you with an update regarding the presence of the COVID-19 coronavirus at Village Assisted Living.

We were informed late yesterday of a direct care worker in assisted living (non-memory care) who tested positive for COVID-19. On Thursday and Friday, Aug. 6 and 7, the person had no symptoms, passed the daily pre- and post-shift screenings and wore an appropriate face covering throughout both shifts. On Aug. 6 the person was tested as part of standard protocol for a routine medical appointment and worked the following day, assuming they were not positive.

We were notified on the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 10 that the results were positive. At this time we have no residents or associates with symptoms.

Our facility remains in very close communication with local, regional, county, and state authorities to ensure we are taking all of the appropriate steps. We also are following guidance from CMS and the CDC to reduce the impact of COVID-19.

Due to the current circumstances, we are:

  • Testing potentially-exposed residents Wednesday, Aug. 12 and associates Thursday, Aug. 13.
All associates, residents and responsible family members have already been notified that the testing will take place.
  • Increasing temperature tests of potentially exposed residents to four times per day.
  • Requiring associates who were potentially exposed, in assisted living (non-memory care) areas, to wear surgical masks – rather than fabric face coverings – until they receive their test results.

Our testing lab typically returns results to us within their promised 72 hours – often sooner. We will notify you as soon as possible once we are informed of the results.  Our focus remains squarely on the health and well-being of our entire John Knox Village community.  Please know that we are working extremely hard to keep everyone who lives and works here safe and healthy.  This is a responsibility that weighs heavily on us every day.

Please call or e-mail me and I will do my best to answer any questions and help keep you in contact with your loved one.

Aug. 7, 2020

I am happy to share this week that we have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Village Assisted Living or Village Assisted Living Memory Care residents or employees.

The Village Care Center has had one new associate from a non-direct care part of the building test positive, as part of their hiring and orientation process. Those who were determined to have had the closest contact have been tested and remain off work, pending results. Additionally, an Independent Living associate, from the Sales, Marketing and Communications department has tested positive. This person has limited contact with others outside of this department. Their last day worked was Wednesday, Aug. 5, testing took place Aug. 6 and results were returned the morning of Aug. 7. All members of the department have been tested; five are negative – the rest are awaiting results.

Outside Visits: This week we began our outside visits in assisted living and all of our memory care neighborhoods.  We could not have picked a more perfect week  for this – the weather was absolutely beautiful.  I think it is fair to say that everyone was so happy to participate in the visits – I saw families play the violin, display artwork, or even bring old friends along!  We look forward to more of these visits (and continued compliance with the guidelines).

Podiatrist: The podiatrist will see residents in Assisted Living and Memory Care neighborhoods August 12 to 14.  The podiatrist and assistant will be screened for COVID-19 via the standard questions, have their temperatures taken, and will follow all infection control requirements, including wearing masks.

Aug. 1, 2020

I want to give you an update on the COVID-19 re-testing performed this week and other COVID-19 cases on the John Knox Village campus.

Because we were notified on Friday, July 17, that a Fireside associate tested positive for COVID-19, we followed up by tested and retested potentially exposed associates.  We received the results back on the re-testing on Thursday, and all the results came back negative!

The Village Care Center recently returned to random testing of 10% of associates from various parts of the building and different shifts. This week, one asymptomatic associate who last worked the night of July 28 had a positive test result. This associate is in a patient care position in the Garden View long term care neighborhood. As a result, all Garden View residents and any associates who may have been in contact with this person were swabbed today for COVID-19 testing. At this time, no residents are showing any signs or symptoms. All families of potentially exposed patients have been contacted via telephone.

Also this week, on Wednesday afternoon, the Village announced that a JKV Auxiliary shops associate received a positive test result. This person passed their screening on Friday, July 24, then began experiencing symptoms over the weekend. The General Store has been disinfected by Public Safety’s new portable equipment.

To summarize our current status with COVID-19 cases:

Village Assisted Living: Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 7/31/20:

  • 1 resident and 3 associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 1 resident and 3 associates have recovered from COVID-19

Village Care Center: Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 7/31/20:

  • 2 residents and 12* associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 2 residents and 11* associates have recovered from COVID-19

All Village areas outside of VCC and VAL:
Cumulative Totals from 3/14/20 to 7/31/20:

  • 5 associates have had confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses
  • 4 associates have recovered from COVID-19

*1 is a non-JKV employee who works in the building. We have had some cases that, upon re-testing, we suspect they may have been false positives. We are erring on the side of caution and counting them as testing positive and as recovered.
3/14/20 is when the John Knox Village campus began steps to close to visitors.

I am pleased to say, that even though, as a campus, we are experiencing more presence of the coronavirus – as is the whole metropolitan area – we have not had any indication of transmission from the affected associates to anyone else at JKV. Our processes and procedures seem to be working well. We discover cases early, isolate the individuals and give them time to recover, and when they meet our criteria they are approved to return to work.
