I have been involved in education my entire life and was amazed to discover that there are volunteer opportunities at JKV that fit my retirement lifestyle perfectly. The Children’s Village is our child development center for associates, and opportunities abound for hands-on experiences for volunteers who work with children 3 months through school age. In summer there is a camp for older children and different volunteer opportunities are available.
JKV works very closely with the University of Missouri-Kansas City Medical School by offering a mentoring program for the first-year medical students. This is a required course to introduce these young people to seniors who live independently. Both of these volunteer opportunities have wonderful support systems through the JKV Volunteer Services program, the Children’s Village director and teachers, and the UMKC Medical School staff.
"Volunteering should be worthwhile satisfying and fun – this is why I choose to focus my time in these areas."
--Adele Graue, John Knox Village Volunteer
"I have volunteered at the John Knox Village Care Center for more than eight years. It is extremely fulfilling and rewarding. The residents are grateful for our service, even if it is just a smile and a friendly pat on the arm. I was a nurse most of my working life and always loved geriatric medicine, so this is an environment in which I am comfortable
and happy."
