Senior Centers
A vital link in the service delivery network which older persons may avail themselves of, senior centers are functioning as meal sites, screening clinics, recreational centers, social service agency branch offices, mental health counseling clinics, older worker employment agencies, volunteer coordinating centers, and community meeting halls. The significance of senior centers cannot be underestimated for they provide a sense of belonging, offer the opportunity to meet old acquaintances and make new friends, and encourage individuals to pursue activities of personal interest and involvement in the community.
Skilled Nursing Care
Sometimes a patient needs additional time to recuperate after a hospital stay. This is frequently the case with older adults because they tend to recover at a slower rate. Our skilled nursing programs are designed to meet the needs of these patients, providing round-the-clock nursing care, usually for a limited number of days or weeks. "Skilled Nursing Care" means that licensed nurses and/or therapists will work daily with the patient. Their goal is usually to facilitate a return to the patient’s highest level of function.
Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)
Once referred to as nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) have evolved in the services they provide. These facilities are licensed with an organized professional staff and inpatient beds, and they provide continuous nursing and other health-related, psychosocial, and personal services to patients who are not in an acute phase of illness, but who primarily require continued care on an inpatient basis.
Speech Therapy
A speech therapist is a specialist with training in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of speech, voice, and language disorders who works with people, unable to make speech sounds or cannot make them clearly. They also work with people who stutter, have swallowing problems, fluency and rhythm problems, inappropriate pitch, harsh voice and speech quality problems.
State Agencies on Aging (SUAs)
The Older Americans Act mandates that each state have a state agency on aging which is part of state government. The State Agency on Aging is the designated focal point within the state government responsible for administering a complex service system designed to complement and support other human service systems in meeting the needs of the elderly.
