Care or Case Management
Case managers work with family members and older adults to assess, arrange and evaluate supportive efforts of seniors to remain independent.
Caregiver
A generic term referring to a person, either paid or voluntary, who helps an older person with the activities of daily living, [LINK: “activities of daily living” to definition on this page.] health care, financial matters, guidance, companionship and social interaction. A caregiver can provide more than one aspect of care. Most often the term refers to a family member or friend who aids the older person.
Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS)
Formerly the U.S. Health Care Financing Administration, CMS is an element of the Department of Health and Human Services, which finances and administers the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Among other responsibilities, CMS establishes standards for the operation of nursing facilities that receive funds under the Medicare or Medicaid programs.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
CNAs are trained and certified to help nurses by providing non-medical assistance to patients, such as help with bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom. CNAs are trained, tested and certified, and work under the supervision of an RN (registered nurse) or LPN (licensed practical nurse).
Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)
CCRCs are housing communities that provide different levels of care based on the residents' needs, from independent living apartments to skilled nursing care in an affiliated nursing home. Residents move from one setting to another based on their needs, but continue to remain a part of their CCRC community. |
